Hebrews 1:1-4

The Supremacy of God’s Son

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

Why it matters that Jesus is your Prophet, Priest and King:

  1. Your Priest is your Prophet:
    • If you find yourself struggling to forgive yourself, you can find hope that the Priest who purifies you from your sins is also the prophet that speaks truth when he says “your sins are forgiven.”
  2. Your Prophet is your King:
    • If you find doubt in the words of the Lord, you can find hope that the words of the Prophet come from the King who upholds his creation and his sovereign over all to bring about his will.
  3. Your King is your Priest:
    • If you doubt the sovereignty and goodness of your king, as you find yourself in heartbreak, darkness creeping in around you, or sin victimizes you,  you can find hope that the King is the one who stepped into darkness to bring light through the forgiveness of sins and cleansing of unrighteousness.

Other Scriptures:

Heb. 5:1: “For every high priest chosen from among is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.”

Heb 2:17: “Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

Heb. 8:1-2: “Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heavena minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.”

Heb. 9:24: “For Christ has entered, not into the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf

Heb. 9:15: “Therefore, he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant …”

Heb. 7:23-24: “The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.”

Heb. 7:27-28: “He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.  For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints as Son who has been made perfect.”

Heb 1:8-9a: “But of the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.  You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness…”

Heb 1:12: “You are the same, and your years will have no end”

Col. 2:13-15: “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive to gather with him, having forgiven us all out trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.  This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.  He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open home, by triumphing over them in him.”

Heb. 2:14-15: Since therefore, the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”

Eph. 1:20-22: “Which he brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come.  And he put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church.”
