In our desire to equip parents as they “train their children up in the way they should go,” we have created a blog series to communicate the lessons our kids will be learning each Sunday, family discussion questions, resources for discipling children, and opportunities to engage in serving and loving the world with your kids.Renew KidsOur curriculum comes from The Gospel Project for Kids and systematically teaches the stories of the Bible starting in Genesis and finishing in Revelation. We are currently studying Jesus’ life in the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

HeadHead » Learning the Story

This month in Renew Kids we are learning about many of the stories that were told about Jesus in the gospels as he and his disciples headed towards Jerusalem in preparation for Passover. This week we are looking at Jesus as He shares the Passover meal with His disciples. Jesus spoke some of the most significant words that He would share with His disciples during this meal.

The words however were not just for the disciples, they were very much for us. And the Passover itself is incredibly significant as it all points to Jesus and His sacrifice. Knowing that He would soon be crucified and that His time with His disciples was drawing to a close, Jesus takes care to emphasize what He really wanted them to know; what was really important. One of the central parts of what He shared was the Lord’s Supper, or communion. We are told in the scriptures to do it often in remembrance of Him. To read Jesus’ own words, see the following passages.
Matthew 26:17-30;Mark 14:12-26;Luke 22:7-23

Review Questions:

  • What special celebration did Jesus and His friends observe? (Passover)
  • Why did God’s people celebrate Passover? (to remember God freed them from Egypt)
  • What were some things people had to do to prepare for the meal? (sacrifice the Passover lamb, cook the lamb and the other foods, set up the room)
  • Who did Jesus tell His friends to find? (a man carrying a water jug)
  • What did Jesus tell His friends at supper? Jesus said, “Remember Me.”

HeartHeart » Family Discussion

Reading and discussing stories about Jesus’ interactions with people in the bible can lead to interesting conversations with your children about what God desires of us. Take some time to think through this story and discuss, as a family, how these scriptures impact our understanding of what and who God is asking us to be.

  1. What is something new you learned or that stood out to you in this story?
  2. How does the Passover remind us of Jesus?
  3. Why did Jesus direct His disciples to eat and drink in “remembrance” of Him?
  4. Jesus refers to the cup as a “the new covenant”. What is unique about this covenant?
  5. How does the new covenant impact our lives today?

HandsHands » The Word at Work

The Bible says that God’s Word does not return to Him void without accomplishing what He wills (Isaiah 55:11). Spend some time as a family and ask God how He wants you to live out what He is teaching you through scripture. Then make a plan to do it!

Ideas:

  • Family Communion. Jesus directed His disciples to eat and drink in remembrance of Him. This does not require communion to be administered by a priest. It does not have to be shrouded in some intricate ritual. It doesn’t even have to be at church only. The main thing is that we remember Him. This is something that can be easily done at home as a family. Carve out some time this week to have family devotionals. Talk about Jesus and the New Covenant. Then share in the Lords’s Supper together, talking with your kid’s about what the bread (or crackers) represent, and what the grape juice means for us. Rejoice as a family that He has completely cleansed us from sin and set us free.

Additional family resources:

Each week we will include a family resource for parents as they seek to disciple their children to love and follow Jesus.
